Phyllis Harver broke into films in 1917 as a Mack Sennett Bathing Beauty, and her pretty face became the target for numerous tossed custard pies. By 1919, however, she had become a popular leading lady in dramatic films, primarily as a seductive temptress. It was for Phyllis Harver that false eyelashes were invented. Max Factor created them especially to enhance close-ups during her transition to feature films. From then on, every star wanted them. (Harver carried her make-up in the top of a .10¢ wicker basket).
